The development of this study was to evaluate the temporomandibular joint
dysfunction and determine the effectiveness of a line of osteopathic techniques.
We performed a study with real cases of 18 individuals, 9 in the control group
and 9 in the experimental group, with an age range of 20-60 years and who
have a moderate or severe dysfunction in the joint. Total visits were 4, with pre
and post treatment evaluation at each session.
For patient monitoring, at each visit, we have used two scales, first the Visual
Analog Scale for testing the pain and on the other hand, the Helkimo scale, in
order to quantify and qualify the evolution of patients.
In the treatment, it has been used osteopathic techniques, like articulatory
and Jones technique. They are techniques for treating ligaments, joints, and
muscles with the aim of reducing a displacement of the meniscus containing the
temporomandibular joint structures.
In the results there is a slight trend towards improvement in the experimental
group. This group showed significant changes after treatment, as there is a
marked improvement in the experimental group compared to the control group
comparing the average of 2.81 versus 0.55 in Helkimo, and the mean of -0.46
versus -0.16 in EVA test . The sex factor was not significant.
The conclusion of this project, according to the data collected, is that the
treatment with articulatory techniques and the Jone’s techniques has been
effective. - Abstract

La elaboración de este estudio tuvo como objetivo valorar las disfunciones en
la articulación temporo-mandibular (TMJ) y determinar la eficacia de una línea
de técnicas osteopáticas.
Se ha realizado un estudio con casos reales de 18 individuos, 9 en el grupo
control y 9 en el grupo experimental, con un intervalo de edad de entre 20-60
años y que presentan una disfunción moderada o severa en la articulación. El
total de visitas fueron 4, con evaluación pre y post tratamiento, en cada sesión.
Para el control evolutivo del paciente, en cada visita, se han utilizado dos
escalas, primeramente la escala visual analógica del dolor (EVA) y por otro
lado el índice de Helkimo, con el objetivo de cuantificar y calificar la evolución
de los pacientes
En el tratamiento se ha utilizado técnicas osteopáticas articulatorias y
técnicas de jones. Son técnicas de trabajo de estructuras ligamentosas,
articulares, musculares con el objetivo de reducir un desplazamiento del
menisco que contiene la articulación temporo-mandibular
En los resultados obtenidos hay una tendencia a la mejora en el grupo
experimental. Éste grupo mostró cambios significativos después del
tratamiento, ya que hay una mejora marcada en el grupo experimental respecto
al grupo de control comparando la media de 2,81 frente a 0.55 en Helkimo, y la
media de -0,46 frente a -0.16 en el test de EVA. El factor sexo no fue
significativo.
La conclusión de este proyecto, según los datos recogidos, es que el
tratamiento con técnicas de jones y técnicas articulatorias ha sido efectivo. - presented at
