Abstract
PurposeTo collect information regarding participants’ knowledge of Mindfulness Meditation (MM) and Anticipatory Anxiety (AA); opinions regarding brief MM use in patients presenting at treatment session with AA.MethodsA questionnaire was made available via e-mail to lecturing osteopaths and final year students of relevant UK and European osteopathic institutions. Results58 participants in total completed the survey. The majority identified Mindfulness Meditation with a useful relaxing technique to improve anxiety. Nearly all respondents were not aware of Anticipatory Anxiety (AA) and its effects on patient’s physiology, although anxiety likelihood before a treatment was accepted by many participants. Addressing AA was also considered part of osteopathic care by many osteopaths, despite its impact on treatment efficacy was generally considered as moderate. The majority of osteopaths agreed with MM use on AA patients and MM was considered useful by most of them. Students were also prone to address AA with MM in their future practice, despite MM and AA not appearing as topics at university overall. ConclusionMindfulness Meditation (MM) is a well know practice among Osteopath lecturers and students who took part to the survey. Half of the participants also practice or practiced it and report positive effects on anxiety. Anticipatory Anxiety (AA) is poorly known and not mentioned but its temporary effects on the sympathetic nervous system MM is well accepted in the form of brief pre-treatment sessions, as a possible buffer in patients who are anxious about receiving osteopathic treatment.
