Abstract
Background During pregnancy, the woman's body undergoes a lot of changes to host a foetus and its development, especially musculoskeletal modifications in the pelvis and the trunk (Eldeeb et al., 2016; Sencan et. al, 2017). Increasingly pregnant women turn towards complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) to prepare their bodies for the different changes that they will undergo (Babbar et. al, 2016; Mitchell 2014). Osteopathy can be significantly helpful to decrease several conditions that can occur during the pregnancy (Lavelle 2012; Fawkes 2012). However, patient's expectation of osteopathic care has been poorly researched (Leach et. al, 2013); in particular the patient's view of attending an osteopathic consultation during their pregnancy regarding the outcomes of their physical changes , the benefits, communication with the practitioner, self-help advice and their correlation. Aims The aim of this qualitative research project is to explore and understand the perceptions of a pregnant woman concerning an osteopathic consultation regarding the correlation between their beliefs, the communication with the practitioner and the benefits from the consultation. Furthermore, this could highlight the potential aspects of the consultation that have been neglected or have been shown to be important factors to the participants. Design and Methodology The approach of this study will be based on the phenomenology model with the participation of 2 subjects. Results and Discussion Quantitative findings show consistently good communication between the patient and the practitioner in both cases. Explanations have been given by the practitioner regarding the diagnosis and the treatment and have been understood by the patients. Globally, both of the patients felt confident with their practitioner and the osteopathic treatment they received that helped them with their complaints. Qualitative analysis revealed that these patients are satisfied with the osteopathic treatment in terms of expectations and the relationships between the patient and practitioner and analysis does not highlight any particularly disappointing aspects of the consultation. Conclusion The main conclusion to take away from this study is that consultations during pregnancies at the European School of Osteopathy (ESO) clinic appear to be successful from the patient's point of view.
