- Abstract
- This study was designed to investigate whether a six week beginners course of Pilatesexercise would increase the total range of lumbar sagittal mobility of the lumbar spinein pre menopausal females. The experiment involved sixty females. The control group, of thirty females were recruited from the third and fourth year British School of Osteopathy population, they did not partake in any exercise over the six week period. The other thirty females were the study group (Pilates group) that participated in a six week beginners Pilates course. All females read an information sheet and signed a consent form which were retained, protecting confidentiality. Each subject’s lumbar spine was measured in flexion and extension at week one and week six, with a flexicurve. All lumbar contour measurements were recorded onto paper. From each contour, tangents were drawn and angles measured resulting in upper and lower lumbar spine measurements of flexion and extension.Statistical analyses were implemented in order to compare the measurements of week one and week six within the control group and the study group (Wilcoxon signed rank test). Also, to identify any differences in the total range of lumbar sagittal mobility between the control group and the study group (Mann Whitney test). Non-parametric tests were used due to the data not conforming to the four basic assumptions of parametric tests. The results of this study did not support the hypothesis, yet significant statistical differences were found within each group over the six-week period. These results indicate there is a need for further research to achieve a more in depth appreciation of this study.
