- Abstract
- This study was an attempt to practically investigate relationships between posture and depression. It involved 68 people recruited from the student population at the British School of Osteopathy. They where asked to complete the Profile Of Mood States questionnaire and, on the basis of their score in the depression-dejection scale, they where assigned to either a depressed or non-depressed group. Measurements were then taken of internal rotation at both shoulder joints and the curvature of the thoracic spine. These results were then compared for a significant difference using an unrelated t-test. Results between groups showed a significant difference in the thoracic spine measurements (P = 0.034), but no significant difference in the shoulder measurements (P = 0.31). These results partially support the hypothesis. However more research is into this area is needed.
