- Abstract
- A small qualitative study was carried out to elicit information and identify the key issues in the osteopathic approach to urinary incontinence. Nine qualified osteopaths, who subjectively believed that they had experience in the treatment of patients suffering from the symptom of urinary incontinence, were interviewed. It was identified that urinary incontinence does not appear to be an area in which all osteopaths have experience with only 50% of the individuals approached considering themselves as `experienced' in its treatment and therefore eligible to participate. It was also found that the factors influencing diagnosis and treatment were diverse and that the success of treatment was judged subjectively either by the patient's report of symptom improvement or the tissue sense of the practitioner on palpation. Further research is recommended in two areas: to continue to explore these key issues on a larger sample population and to test the efficacy of the treatment approaches highlighted.
