- Abstract
- The aim of this preliminary pilot study was to investigate whether cross-fibre soft tissue massage can improve the function and force that muscles can generate. The isometric strength of the forearm flexor muscles of the right dominant arm was measured by the Jackson evaluation system.Fifty subjects participated in this study, twenty-five subjects as the control group and twenty-five as the experimental group. The subjects were British School of Osteopathy third and fourth year students who were actively participating in clinic. The subjects ranged between 20 and 30 years of age with an equal male to female ratio.Cross-fibre soft tissue was administered to the right dominant forearm flexor muscles of the experimental group. A series of peak force of contractions at 30-second intervals was undertaken for 10 further peak force of contractions. The control received no cross-fibre soft tissue. The results were inconclusive as no statistical significance was found; therefore the Null Hypothesis could not be rejected. The methodological flaws were acknowledged and criticized. They may have contributed to the lack of statistical significance. Suggestions were made for the modification of future research. If a positive outcome results, the clinical application to osteopathic practice would include general posture, locomotion and gait. Sports science/medicine would also benefit, improving athletic performance and training.
