- Abstract
- Antioxidant vitamins, such as vitamins C and E have shown considerable potentials as therapeutic options for patients suffering from osteoarthritis. Other antioxidants, for example pycnogenols, an extract of pine bark and grape seeds, have only recently been researched, with cancer therapy in mind. However, osteoarthritis, some types of cancer, arteriosclerosis and many other age-related diseases share a common aetiology of prolonged exposure to excessive oxidants. These are the byproducts of metabolism and inflammation. This literature review has revealed some clinical trials and many laboratory based experiments. Investigations of tissue samples, cell cultures and human and animal trials all seem to lead to oxidants causing cartilage and other tissue damage if their levels remain unchecked. There are reports in the literature of success in combining vitamin and manual therapy for treating patients with osteoarthritis. Considering the vast number of people suffering from osteoarthritis, there are enormous potentials for helping these patients if more research is carried out to further this polytherapeutic approach.
