- Abstract
- ObjectiveTo investigate the effects of cold water immersion (CWI) on the lower limb and its effect on pain pressure thresholds. DesignA total of fifteen asymptomatic subjects participated in a single blind, randomised cross over study. Subjects were randomly allocated to either CWI or room water immersion (RWI). All subjects participated in each intervention with a one-week wash out period. Participants were subjected to pain pressure threshold (PPT) measurements pre, post, 5 minutes and 10 minute periods with use of an algometer on the central tendon of the gastrocnemius bi-laterally. A two way repeated ANOVA was carried out to evaluate PPT between the two groups. Statistical significance was set at a value of <0.05. ResultsStatistical significance increase in mean PPT was detected at groups with PPT being elevated in CWI compared to RWI (73.3 ± 18.9 v 60.8 ± 11.3, respectively, p<0.018). A statistical significance was observed as an increase in mean PPT within the CWI group post v pre (P=<0.001), post v 5 minutes (P=0.001) and post v 10 minutes (P<0.001). Further analysis has revealed a statistical significance of mean PPT within CWI v RWI between groups post (P=0.003), 5 minutes (P=0.02) and 10 minutes (P=0.035).There was a statistically significant increase in mean PPT within the CWI v RWI between groups within post (m=17.407, t=3.400, P=0.003), groups within 5 minutes (m=12.887, t=2.517, P=0.02) and groups within 10 minutes (m=11.593, t=2.264, P=0.035). ConclusionCWI on the dominant lower limb resulted in a statistically significant increase in mean PPT values. Further investigations into the effect of CWI on symptomatic patients is needed.
