- Abstract
- Objective: To review and appraise the methodological quality of current evidence for the generic efficacy of manual lymphatic techniques and make recommendations based on the best available evidence. Methods: Systematic computerised and hand literature searches for current peer reviewed research. Best practice guidelines for a systematic review were adapted to suit a narrative review. Methodological quality/risk of bias was appraised by the author using predefined and validated criteria for systematic reviews, randomised controlled trials (RCTs), non-RCTs/Before and After studies, case reports and expert opinion. Results: Forty papers were reviewed, categorised, ranked (within category) and added to summary tables. Conclusions: Despite methodological limitations, the evidence reviewed suggests that there is improvement of symptoms in several conditions and possible immunological benefits derived from the application of manual lymphatic techniques. There is a need for standardised intervention protocols and standardised scoring methods to assess symptomatic improvements.
