- Abstract
- Background: Currently Electrophysical Modality/Agents (EPAs) are widely used by physiotherapists. It is speculated that osteopathic use is low, but research data could not be found after extensive searches. Research evidence for the benefits of EPA use in patient care is scarce, although ultrasound has more promising results. Objective: To gain an overview of osteopathic EPA use, including its use in relation to types of injury or dysfunction. Methods: An original internet survey was developed and piloted, based on key aspects from the existing literature and emailed to osteopaths who registered with an email address. Results: Response rate was low at 13% with 42% of those reporting they currently used an EPA. The most frequently used EPA (determined as >33%) was for daily ‘Ultrasound’ and for weekly ‘Ultrasound and Cold’. Neck and Sports clinical conditions were the most frequently treated with an EPA. Conclusion: This research found that osteopaths use Ultrasound most frequently and this is in accord with previous research into use by physiotherapists.
