Abstract
HVT is a common treatment modality used to treat somatic dysfunction. This study attempted to investigate the possibility of cervical HVT (C3-4 segment) to affect the phrenic nerve and thus the diaphragm as a way of treating chronic obstructive pulmonarydisease (COPD) and asthma. Eleven normal male subjects performed maximal spirometric maneuvers measuring 8 different modes of lung function. They were given a placebo treatment and tested again. A week later the subjects were manipulated bilaterally at the C3-4 level and their lung function tested again. The percentage change between pre intervention levels and post placebo and post HVT was compared. Analysis with a t-test showed that there was no significant difference between the placebo and HVT treatment at the 95% confidence interval (P>0.05). Further studies with corrected methodology and larger populations may prove more consequential.
