Abstract
Objectives To investigate the difference in core stability between semi-professional footballers with and without lower back pain using the pressure biofeedback unit. Summary of background information In recent years research has indicated a link between lumbar spine stability and transverse abdominus / multifidus muscles. It has been hypothesised that the large amount of ballistic movements that predominate in football may predispose footballers to developing dysfunction's in these muscles, resulting in low back pain. The need for accurate assessment of transverse abdominus function has become essential for understanding low back pain in footballers. Study design A comparative study of transverse abdominus and multifidus function in footballers with recurrent low back pain and those with no history of low back pain (no low back pain), as measured by the pressure biofeedback unit. All measurements were taken manually and exclusion criteria kept to a minimum in order to maximise clinical applicability. Methodology Forty subjects were selected from a number of football clubs. Twenty with low back pain and twenty with no low back pain. Pressure biofeedback quantification of core stability (i.e. transverse abdominus and multifidus contraction) in a supine position was undertaken, with the subjects performing two tests. Test two added to the load created by test one by increasing the movement of the lower limb. Results Readings analysed using paired t-test found a statistically significant difference (P<0.05) between the two groups in tests one and two. In both tests the subjects with no low back pain performed better than those with recurrent low back pain. Conclusion There is a significant difference in the core stability offootballers with no low back pain compared to those with recurrent low back pain as measured by the pressure biofeedback unit in conjunction with the two tests. The results enable the researcher to recommend both tests as good enough discriminators in detecting static core stability dysfunction in footballers.
