- Abstract
- Many equestrians in the United Kingdom, both professional and recreational, experience varying degrees of low back pain. This could be related to an altered pelvic tilt angle associated with the common riding position employed by most of the riders. In this study, a sample of such riders performed a regular exercise programme designed to increase the flexibility and muscular support of the lumbar spinal and pelvic regions, and alter the pelvic tilt. The majority reported a significant reduction inthe low back pain experienced and demonstrated an increase in the measured anterior pelvic tilt angle. Despite these observations, there was no statistically discernible correlation between the pelvic tilt angle and the degree of pain experienced. Alison Tyler The effect of exercise on low back pain and the pelvic tilt angle in horse riders Recommendations for future studies 1. The difference in the sagittal pelvic tilt angle between LBP sufferers and an asymptomatic population. 2. The effect of specific exercises on the sagittal pelvic tilt angle in a general population of LBP sufferers. 3. The measurement of the pelvic tilt angle of a horse rider in the riding position and the effect that stirrup length has on it.
