Introduction
This study was designed to assess the effect of manual cyclical intermittent compression on the repair process of exercise induced muscle damage of the main elbow flexors. It was proposed that manual cyclical intermittent compression would support the repair process of soft tissue, producing a reduction in the signs and symptoms of delayed onset muscle soreness.
Method
Eight untrained male subjects performed a standardized eccentric exercise regime, consisting of five sets of ten eccentric bicep curls, with a weighted dumbbell. Both arms were exercised. The dumbbell weight was set at 110% of the 1RM for each arm, for each subject. Following a rest period of lying supine on the plinth for twenty minutes, the dominant arm received five minutes of manual cyclical intermittent compression. The non-dominant arm served as the control for each subject and received a further five minutes rest, lying supine on the plinth. Measurements, (relaxed range of motion, fully flexed range of motion, mid circumference, 6cm circumference and vas rating), were recorded before exercise, immediately after exercise, before intervention, immediately after 'intervention' and after 24hrs, 48hrs, 72hrs and 96hrs.
Results
A two-way ANOVA of the results showed that there was no significant (P>0.05) difference between the treatment arm and the control arm, for each of the five parameters. However, there was a significant (P<0.05) difference between the days, for each of the parameters.
Conclusions
The results showed that the eccentric exercise regime did cause muscle damage. However, the treatment administered did not produce a significant, measurable difference in the signs and symptoms of DOMS. - presented at
